Togat Nusa Retreat. Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. The first swells of 2011 have arrived and this piece of paradise is ready for surfers to come call Pitojat Island home while they chase some of the best waves on earth.
Togat Nusa Retreat (TNR) is owned and operated by Ainsley & John E. Ocean, formerly of Kandui Resort. The retreat is designed & hand-crafted by John E. Ocean using local driftwood, timber & shells and decorated with the couple’s private collection of antique Japanese glass buoys and remains from Dutch fishing vessels, making every structure a unique piece of art.
“This private island retreat is the perfect place to restore, relax & refuel between sessions. Coming home to a beautiful driftwood bungalow, a hot shower and an amazing meal after getting barreled all day takes the Mentawai surf-trip to a new level.”
Positioned within the surf-rich Mentawai Islands, off the coast of West Sumatra, TNR is found just off the Northwest tip of Sipura, nestled among the palm trees and jungle on Pitojat Island - a 12 hectare private island paradise surrounded by epic waves in almost every direction. The island itself is much like a tropical sanctuary, where surfers (and non-surfing family members alike) can escape & unwind.
TNR caters to small groups and can accommodate 6 guests at a time (2 per bungalow).
TNR’s Aussie surf-guide Adam “Birdie” Dube is up at sunrise every morning to greet surfers in the Uma (the main room/restaurant modeled after traditional open-air Mentawai houses), where a private Indonesian chef prepares 3 meals/day.
Over coffee and breakfast, Adam will help surfers decide which of the many accessible breaks they will surf that day.
The Uma looks right out on an epic wave known as “Scarecrows” and is just a short boat ride from many other famous breaks. “Iceland” “Telescopes” “Suicides” and “Seven Palms” are all listed on togatnusaretreat.com as favorite local waves, but as any surfer knows... you’ll have to actually be here to get shown all the secret spots!
Back at the resort, cold Bintangs, sodas, and snacks are available for a nominal fee in the “monkey bar, and Zani Roberts, the island’s Californian yoga instructor/masseuse is available help stretch and restore, so surfers are ready for the next round of barrels.
Non-surfing partners and family members can enjoy pristine beaches all around the island (which can be circumnavigated in just 30 minutes), which are perfect for snorkeling, fishing, swimming, meditating and relaxing while surfers are out catching waves.
It’s the best of all worlds for surfer couples & families, and a truly magical place for all who are lucky enough to
come stay and call it home.
Special 2011 pre-season pricing is available in April 2011.
