Bum Rush Tour kicks off in New Smyrna, Florida (March 27th, 2011 ) – Sun Bum®
Local surfer, Lindsey Baldwin, slugged a quick cup of coffee and checked her email before heading out to surf a little glassy hometown swell Sunday morning. She expected it to be just another day of playing on the waves with a bunch of boys, but to Lindsey's surprise, she returned home with a session she'll never forget and a big fat check for one thousand dollars under her arm.
New Smyrna Beach was crowded and oblivious to the fact that they were witnessing the first stop of the Bum Rush Tour, the highly anticipated random surf contest put on by Sun Bum, a hippy-cool new sun care company out of Cocoa Beach, Florida. " I didn't know anything about a contest going on," Lindsey explained. "I saw Sun Bum in Puerto Rico at the Rip Curl Pro Search contest, so I recognized the big ape banner when they raised it, but when the horn sounded I had no idea I was sitting in the line up for a contest. The next thing I knew they were calling me in!", Lindsey grinned. "She was in a full wet suit, so from shore, we thought she was a dude!" Sun Bum judge Jeff Garber explained. "It wasn't really very close. She had a cool style, two sick barrels, and a nice top to bottom cut back in the closing minute that unanimously gave her the win."
The spontaneous tour plans to hit 10 beaches on both coasts this summer from California to New Jersey according to the company website. "It's a legit 15-minute contest that's open to whoever's in the water when we show up," Sun Bum's Event Director Dustin Smith explained. "We want to give someone a grand for just doing what they love to do. No aggression, no entry fee, just fifteen minutes of a real session and then somebody will be standing on a podium, holding a fat check over their head."
