WHATS
THE SCOOP ON WSSM?
WSS magazine made its debut in January of 2004 as ChickSurf, a company
started by myself, Sandra, with the tremendous help of my husband Dan,
out of the combined love of surfing, working for myself, and working on
my computer.
But I'm already ahead of myself. Back in 1999, we moved to Mexico City,
Mexico, to study web design & graphics, with the hopes of working
in that industry when we moved to Hawaii the following year. Fast forward
2 years.I came to realize that the corporate lifestyle consisting of the
typical 9-5 job wasn't going to work out for me since I was officially
bitten by the surfing bug. No matter how much I enjoyed web design, the
industry wasn't opening any doors to me, or at least any doors that I
was willing to walk through. My husband suggested I find a way to combine
my design skills with my love for surfing, surfing buddies and shopping.
ChickSurf was born!
A DIFFERENT APPROACH...
I have enjoyed
the many girls surfing magazines that are out there, but haven't had the
desire to purchase the expensive items advertised in them. I also felt
that most magazines were so focused on flashyadvertisements, that the
real, day-to-day happenings in most surfing girls lives were completely
skipped over as the companies simply dove straight into our purses.
I wanted to change that.

In ChickSurf I was able to express myself and the things I loved in a
simple format that I hoped many other girls out there would enjoy as much
as I do. Articles on Health, Beauty, Fitness & Water Safety, along
with the local tide charts (I have to know what the tides are doing),
& surf maps, as well as many other great things like coupons and surfer
stories.
WHY
THE NAME CHANGE?
After being
on stands for a couple issues, we began to receive feedback from both
readers and advertisers alike, and realized we had a much broader range
of readers that enjoy our publication than we had originally anticipated.
Theyranged from 15-55years of age. So, we decided we wanted to accomodate
ALL ages, so we basically took the "chick" and grew her into
a "Woman".
Women's SurfStyle Magazine is the result. We love the new name, and so
do our readers, judging from the response. We are truly grateful to all
the women that responded and let us into their worlds, the real surfing
women and girls of Oahu!
