A LITTLE HISTORY
My husband, Maui McMillin, used to teach
surfing and started the surf shop in January 2003. Then a few months
later, he married me “the shopper” and the store grew
into two locations with our own exclusive clothing line, Maui Lai.
At Da Beach House Maui, we sell everything you would need to be
outfitted for the beach and surfing as well as furnishings and items
that would compliment the beach house lifestyle.
UNIQUE FROM OTHER SURF SHOPS
How many times do you buy something
because it looks so cute at the store and you take it home and rarely
wear it because it is not very comfortable or flattering to your
figure? I have a closet full of clothes and swimsuits that I don’t
wear, so I designed the Maui Lai clothing line to provide girls
and women with clothing that fits great, feels comfortable, and
looks stylish yet casual.
We can fit girls from youth sizes to a size 19 or 2X. Because we
design and manufacture our own clothes, we can provide smaller and
larger sizes that are not available in most other surf shops. All
of our Maui Lai items are 100% unique in design and fit!
“MUST HAVE” ITEMS FROM THE MAUI LAI LINE
Every girl/woman needs to try on our Maui
Lai long boardshorts that sell for $34.95. I
have outfitted so many girls in these perfect fitting, low-waisted,
drawstring adjustable, and no Velcro boardshorts. It’s a slenderizing
look with lots of room for sitting or straddling a surfboard and
is easy to match the boardshorts with our rashguards, t-shirts,
and tanks. The t-shirts and tank tops are made from 100% cotton
and get softer and softer after each wash.
I not only design the cut of the clothing,
but also design the cute surfer girl drawings and prints. Additionally,
you need to own a pair of our perfect fitting capris. The capris
are awesome to wear before or after surfing, working out, practicing
yoga, or just going out.
SWIMSUITS FOR SURFER GIRLS
Swimsuits are essential to every surfer girl. We cater to the surfer
girls who want to show skin and those who want to cover up as much
as possible. I have a custom line of swimwear that is manufactured
in Brazil. The Brazilian made suits are made from the most durable
lycra and wash without fading too noticeably.
You can wear these suits all day long
because the material is so comfortable. We always make coordinating
swimsuits and rashguards for mothers and daughters. I also carry
another line of swimwear that compliments different body types.
We Typically sell swimsuits in separates so you can mix and match
for your perfect suit!

We have over 200 designs of Hawaiian light switch covers that range
from vintage Hawaiian, waves, surf designs, aloha prints, and tropical
flowers. The light switch covers brighten up every room with a little
art from Hawaii. The guys love the Maui Ripper boardshorts and our
Men’s surf design t-shirts. We also have a huge selection
of rashguards in all sizes (from infants to Men’s 3X).
We
carry the cutest baby bikinis and little boys boardshorts that are
hard to resist.
We try to make it a one stop shop for all shoppers on the island
or customers shopping for gifts on-line.

NEW ITEMS FOR 2007
We carry the latest styles of Reef slippers and Crocs. I
am constantly designing new stuff for the Maui Lai line and we are
expanding our baby line and home décor section.
RENT
OR BUY A SURFBOARD
When renting boards, we specialize in finding the appropriate board
for each surfer based on skill and swell. We rent soft tops, epoxy,
foam and glass boards ranging in all shapes from long to short.
Portable hard racks and straps are also included. We sell boards
off the rack and also have a local shaper who customizes in glass
shaped boards. We’re having our shaper design a custom 4 foot
hot pink longboard with one of my surfer girl designs for our daughter,
who we are expecting in January.

SURF SPOTS
Our flagship store is located at the Harbor Shops at Ma’alaea,
near the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium and the Pacific Whale Foundation.
The Ma’alaea surf shop overlooks Ma’alaea Harbor’s
famous surf spot, “Freight Trains”. It’s a 150
yard long right that tubes faster than a speeding locomotive.
People have been known to be tubed almost the whole ride. A few
miles down towards Lahaina is an ultimate break for long boarders,
called 1,000 Peaks.
Our Ma’alaea store location is centrally located to most of
the
best surf breaks on the island: 10–15 minutes down to the
Lahaina coastline, 30 minutes to Honolua Bay, 20 minutes to Sand
Piles, 30 minutes to the Tavares Bay and Hookipa, and 10 minutes
to Kihei.
HOW
DID I ACTUALLY FIND A SURFER TO MARRY?
I was on vacation and was surfing up and
down the Lahaina coastline. Maui and I saw
each other surfing in the water and smiled
at each other. One day, he pulled out his
ukulele, 12 pack of beer, and serenaded me.
Nine days later he asked me to marry him and
we were married two months later. I left my
job as the Director of Admissions of the
business school at UC Berkeley, sold my condo
in the Bay Area, and gave away almost all of
my designer clothing. I packed up my 2 surfboards (a small addition
to Maui’s collection of over 100 surfboards) and 5 duffle
bags and became a full-time surfer and entrepreneur. Maui and I
are true believers in finding significant others with common interests
andgoals. We both love to surf and we thrive on building a business
that reflects our lifestyle and personalities. We can’t wait
to have our daughter learn how to surf and be a part of our family
business.
