A CLOSER LOOK AT EPOXY
by Island Glass Surfboards

What exactly is an EPOXY surfboard?

An Island Glass epoxy board is made with hand-shaped EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam and hand-glassed using Epoxy aluzine resins.

As we know, most on the market are considered "pop-outs"... what makes it a "pop-out"?
"Pop-out" boards are molded epoxy and cannot be customized. They also have limited flexablity, but they are very strong and very affordable.

Can you hand shape an Epoxy surfboard?
Yes, I handshape EPS foam with PVC stringers. This allows me to customize boards up to 16' long and 34" wide. The possibilities are endless.

Can an epoxy board have a stringer?
All Island Glass Surfboards have PVC stringers. This gives more flex to the board without it breaking.

Major differences between a "pop-out" and an Island Glass surfboard?
Island Glass boards are made in the good ol' USA, not other foreign countries. We support the local market using only materials from Hawaii and producing 100% of our boards on the west side of Oahu.
Another difference is that we are not limited to a mold. We customize everything from our foam blanks to our custom glass jobs.

Being one among few "Stand-Up Paddle Board" hand-shapers here in Hawaii, why have you chosen to pursue producing such large boards versus the traditional short or fun shaped board?
I ride "big boards" and love producing them for those who enjoy it as well. Who best to shape a big board than someone who rides them and understands what the customer wants. Big boards are so universal. They are used for tandem, stand-up paddle surfing, big boy surfing as well as fishing boards. Beginning surfers also find the stability of a bigger board more comfortable and easier to catch waves on.

As a local business located on the West Side of Oahu, what made you choose this particular region to open up shop?
We love the country!!! The surf, the friends and the aloha of the west side has kept us here for almost 10 years.

How have you become a part of the surfer community and what do you see in the future for Island Glass Surfboards?

I wanted to have a surfboard buisness that supports the people within community, not just the pros from around the world. Here we promote and support the kids and our friends who taught us about the "aloha" spirit and the place we call home.
Our future is in the children of our community.

Closing thoughts?
Thank you to our friends and supporters who have enabled us to share our surfboards and our "aloha".
